I. Newspapers of the day. What were they like?
The New York Sun, the New York Tribune, The New York Times, New York Herold existed in the New York area.In Poe’s time, the newspapers were all about speed. This was a time where the truth could be sorted out later.
The competition among newspapers during the time even allowed an idea to spread from one newspaper to another with no regards to the facts. For example, a newspaper could reveal a “breaking headline” and then the other newspapers would release their own “breaking headline”,  the same story with a side note on not having space in the paper.I.a) The Sun (New York)
